eATA – FAQ about the digital ATA Carnet
On 1 June 2026, eATA launches – the digital ATA Carnet. Find answers to the most common questions about the app, QR codes, customs clearance and how to get started.
The ATA carnet is the customs document that simplifies the temporary export of goods to nearly 80 countries. On 1 June 2026, eATA launches – the digital version of the ATA Carnet. The same trusted document, the same international validity, but without the paperwork. You download your carnet into the ATA app, prepare your trip and clear customs with a QR code.
Sweden is among the first countries in the world to offer eATA. Your carnet is still issued by your local Chamber of Commerce. What changes is how you use it once you’re on your way.
Below you’ll find answers to the most common questions about eATA.
Getting started with eATA
How do I download the ATA app?
The ATA app is available for free on the App Store (iPhone/iOS) and Google Play (Android). Search for “ATA Carnet” in your device’s app store to find and install it.
Can I apply for an eATA carnet directly through the app?
No. Carnet applications must be submitted through your issuing Chamber of Commerce. In Sweden, ATA carnets are issued by several Chambers of Commerce nationwide. The ATA app is solely for managing and using a carnet that has already been issued.
How do I download my eATA carnet into the app?
The carnet holder – or an authorised representative – must enter the Carnet ID and PIN code issued by their issuing Chamber of Commerce into the ATA app. This will download the digital carnet into your digital wallet. In Sweden, ATA Carnets are issued by several Chambers of Commerce around the country. For detailed step-by-step instructions, see the ATA App Guide.
What is the difference between my password and the PIN code in the ATA app?
There are two separate credentials. The password is linked to your personal user account (registered with an email address) and used to log in to the ATA app. The PIN code is linked to a specific ATA Carnet and used exclusively to download that carnet into your digital wallet.
Preparing and completing a trip
How do I prepare a trip or complete a transaction in the eATA app?
Full instructions are available in the ATA App Guide and in video tutorials on YouTube. In brief: after downloading your carnet, select “Prepare Trip,” choose your destination and the goods to include – your transaction QR codes will then be generated and ready for use at customs.
Can I perform split shipments with eATA?
Yes. When preparing a trip in the ATA app, you can select specific goods from your General List to declare for that particular journey. This allows for split shipments, mirroring the flexibility available with a physical ATA carnet.
I downloaded my carnet but cannot see any QR codes. What should I do?
QR codes are not generated automatically upon download. The mandatory first step is to set up a trip in the app. Once the trip is configured, the transaction QR codes used at customs will be generated automatically.
At customs
Do I need an internet connection at customs when using eATA?
Yes, an active internet connection is required at the point of customs clearance. It is needed to update declarations and receive real-time transaction confirmations. We recommend ensuring connectivity before reaching the border crossing.
Does the cancellation code work for the EU two-step export procedure?
Yes. In the EU, the export process involves two steps: “Export” and “Exit.” If an error occurs, the cancellation code provided by the carnet holder allows a customs officer to cancel a committed transaction and restart the procedure from the beginning.
Does a forwarding agent need to create their own account to use eATA?
Not necessarily. If the carnet holder agrees to share access, the agent can use the Carnet ID and PIN code to access the carnet via their own account in the ATA app. Alternatively, the holder can share only a specific voucher for a single transaction, without granting full access to the carnet.
Countries and validity
In which countries does eATA work from 1 June 2026?
From 1 June 2026, eATA is accepted in EU member states, Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom – a total of approximately 30 countries and customs territories. The United States is expected to join in the second half of 2026. The ICC’s goal is a complete global transition by 2027.
During the transition period, it is important to check whether your destination country accepts eATA before departure. In countries that have not yet joined the system, the physical ATA carnet is still required. Up-to-date information on participating countries is available on the ICC’s eATA page.
What happens if goods exported with eATA then travel to a country that does not yet accept electronic carnets?
During the current coexistence phase, the paper ATA carnet remains the only legally valid document in countries that have not yet joined the eATA system. If you export using electronic validation only and the goods subsequently travel to a non-participating country, a paper carnet is required for that leg of the journey. The eATA system currently has no legal standing in non-participating countries.
