Anders Arborelius

Anders Arborelius has served as Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Stockholm since 1998 and was elevated to Cardinal in 2017.

Born in Switzerland in 1949 and raised in Lund, he converted to Catholicism in 1969 later joining the Carmelite Order. He holds a Master of Arts in Modern Languages from Lund University and has studied theology and philosophy in Bruges and Rome.

As a prominent figure in Swedish and international church affairs, Cardinal Arborelius is a member of several Vatican dicasteries, including those overseeing clergy, Eastern Churches, and Christian unity. Since 2020, he has also served on the Vatican’s Council for the Economy.

In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded H.M. The King’s Medal in 2022 for his impact on Swedish and global religious life.
