eATA Carnet

– the digital ATA Carnet for faster customs clearance

The ATA Carnet is the customs document that simplifies the temporary export of goods to nearly 80 countries. On 1 June 2026, eATA launches – the digital version of the ATA Carnet. The same trusted document, the same international validity, but without the paperwork. You download your carnet into the ATA app, prepare your trip and clear customs with a QR code.

Sweden is among the first countries in the world to offer eATA. Your carnet is still issued by your local Chamber of Commerce. What changes is how you use it once you’re on your way.

What is eATA Carnet?

The eATA Carnet is a digital system developed by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in collaboration with the World Customs Organization (WCO). It digitalises the entire ATA Carnet lifecycle – from issuance and declarations to transactions at border crossings.

The purpose is straightforward: to make the international transport of goods faster, safer and more efficient for businesses, freight forwarders and customs officers around the world.

How eATA Carnet works – step by step

1. Issuance – When your ATA Carnet is issued by your Chamber of Commerce, a digital version is generated at the same time.

2. Download – You download your digital carnet directly to your phone via the official ICC ATA app. For security reasons, the document is encrypted and never transmitted in an open format.

3. Prepare your border crossing – At the border, you unlock your carnet in the app and create a declaration. A unique QR code is generated for you to show the customs officer.

4. Customs inspection with QR code – The customs officer scans the QR code and reviews the declaration via the ATA Carnet Customs Portal. If approved, the transaction is validated digitally.

5. Digital confirmation – The transaction is recorded and a confirmation is sent immediately to your phone.

Global rollout – launching 1 June 2026

The global transition to eATA Carnet begins on 1 June 2026, with the EU, Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom as pioneers. Other countries are expected to join within a two-year period.

During the transition phase, it is important to note that the physical ATA Carnet is still required when travelling to countries that have not yet joined the digital system.
